The Xiaomi group, known primarily for its smartphones, has expanded its range over the years and has entered the market for household electronics but also for electric vehicles. His e-scooters and e-bikes have been on the market for a few years now. But as the Chinese magazine “Late Post” reports, citing Insider, Xiaomi has been planning an e-car for a long time.
Xiaomi denies e-car rumors
Xiaomi started the “Mi Car” project back in 2018 to test the feasibility of a Electric car-Investigate production. In the meantime, several patents have already been registered. According to “Late Post”, it was decided “after years of deliberation” that the “Mi Car” project should be implemented in the near future under the direction of the company’s founder and CEO Lei Jun. However, it was also pointed out that the plans are still at an early stage and could therefore be changed.
Xiaomi has since denied this report. It is true that developments in the e-vehicle industry are being closely monitored, but there is no official e-car project and no corresponding decision has been made.
Recently, some Asian tech companies have announced that they will be entering the auto business. In January alone, Baidu and Foxconn expressed their interest in this market.
There is currently hot speculation about whether the US tech giant Apple will bring its own iCar onto the market. But so far it is not known whether Apple actually intends to develop its own car or whether the iCompany would rather act as a system provider in the field of autonomous driving.
And as “Reuters” also claims to have found out, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei is planning to present its own electric car this year and is already negotiating with several Chinese automobile manufacturers about the use of their production facilities. Huawei has denied this and sees itself only as a supplier.
The e-car market should certainly be of interest to the mobile phone manufacturers Xiaomi, Apple and Huawei, after all, the global automotive market currently has sales of over 2 trillion US dollars, whereas the global smartphone market only has a good 400 Brings billions of dollars. As part of collaborations, Xiaomi is even working on the software for electric cars. Xiaomi and Lei Jun are also involved in the two e-car manufacturers XPeng and NIO. But having your own e-car would be a huge step that would still require major investments and some time.
