NEWTON (dpa-AFX) – US President Donald Trump shortly before the election in the USA, questioned the effectiveness of strict everyday restrictions and Europe’s handling of the coronavirus. “The exploding cases in Europe have shown that draconian lockdowns – that’s them, draconian – do not stop the virus,” said the Republican on Saturday at a campaign rally in Newton, Pennsylvania. “Italy was in lockdown – and now it’s starting all over again.”
Trump also bragged three days before the election date on Tuesday that the mortality rate in the US is 40 percent lower than in Europe. “And Europe did a good job, it’s a very brutal thing. Everyone thought Germany is doing well, well, well, well. But they’re not doing well,” he said. “You can just see what’s going on over there, France again, Spain, Italy. We’re fine. We just don’t get any recognition for it.”
It was unclear what numbers Trump was referring to with his statement. The mortality rate indicates how many more people have died in a certain period than in a comparable previous period.
In the United States, a CDC health agency forecast ranges between around 236,000 and 318,000 deaths in connection with the corona pandemic. The USA is a country with around 330 million inhabitants and, according to the Johns Hopkins University, has more than 230,000 confirmed corona deaths.
The European alliance Euromomo is currently assuming that around 223,000 people have died from the virus in the countries that provide data. Around 448 million people currently live in the European Union, and not all EU countries provide data for Euromomo.
Trump is running for re-election on November 3, but is behind his challenger Joe Biden in national polls. Because of the complicated voting system, the surveys are only of limited value. The President has been downplaying the risk of the corona virus for months and is resisting strict preventive measures in the USA./max/DP/mis
