Sustainability plays an increasingly important role in today’s society. People attach great importance to sustainably produced food as well as sustainable energy and mobility, but environmentally friendly products are also becoming more and more important in the fashion world.
In addition to organic cotton, recycled materials are increasingly being used to make clothes, including the world’s most popular shoes – sneakers.
The manufacturers refer to the more environmentally friendly versions of their models as “sustainable sneakers”, “vegan sneakers” or “sustainable sneakers”. Large fashion labels and smaller designers are enjoying a steadily growing number of buyers thanks to the organic trend.
Designers are feeding the market with ko shoes
Already four years ago – 2016 – jumped
adidas as one of the first large sneaker producers on the train of sustainable sneakers. The German group manufactured a first model from recycled plastic with the aim of exclusively using plastic waste for its own production by 2024.
But also the American competitor
Nike has been producing sneakers for some time using recycled plastic waste.
Unlike the market leaders, the young sneaker manufacturer Genesis was born from the idea of ecological shoes. The most sustainable sneaker label of all – as Genesis describes itself – has been selling only ecological models in the price category from 79 to 129 euros since February 2020. The 32 variants of Genesis are available on the popular online platforms such as About You and Zalando.
Organic cotton and natural rubber
But the sneakers from the French manufacturer Veja also advertise sustainability and have already made it from a niche shoe to a trend product. The founders Sbastian Kopp and Franois-Ghislain Morrillion have been working on the ko-Schuh project for 16 years and have since sold 4.5 million products.
The soles consist of 22 percent natural rubber, while the leather is ecologically processed. The fashion label also offers models made of organic cotton and linen for vegans. “Harry Potter” actress Emma Watson and Duchess Meghan are among the prominent wearers of Veja sneakers.
There are now numerous manufacturers who follow the trend of organic sneakers and in this way improve the ecological footprint of their own brand and that of the consumer. So if you want to lead a more environmentally conscious life, you could just take a closer look the next time you buy shoes and possibly opt for a sustainably produced sneaker in order to further promote the eco-trend in the fashion industry.
