HAMBURG (dpa-AFX) – According to a report by “Sport Bild”, the former European football champion Matthias Sammer will be an expert for the Champions League on the Prime Video streaming service of the US Internet giant Amazon. In addition to the 53-year-old, ex-national players Mario Gomez (35) and Benedikt Hwedes (33) as well as former DFB player Kim Kulig (31) will be among the experts in the new season.
Sammer had last worked as a Bundesliga expert for the broadcaster Eurosport from 2017 to 2019. Before the 2019/20 season, he announced his retirement for personal reasons. Shortly afterwards, the streaming service DAZN took over the Bundesliga rights package from Eurosport.
Amazon will be present with the Champions League from the coming season. The online giant shows the top game on Tuesday evening on its paid streaming service. The live package includes a total of 16 games. Sky presenter Sebastian Hellmann will also present the Champions League on Amazon in the future. His previous Sky colleague Jonas Friedrich (41) will comment on the games.
The pay TV broadcaster Sky missed out on rights poker for the next three seasons and will not be in the royal class for the first time in 21 years. Since the 2018/19 season, the Champions League has been shown exclusively on Sky and the DAZN streaming service, which is also paid for.
The largest provider on the German market will be DAZN from 2021/22. According to its own information, the streaming service shows 121 out of 137 royal class games live, including most of the German games. He also offers conferences and highlight reporting.
