BERLIN (Dow Jones) – The SPD parliamentary deputy Sren Bartol defends himself against ideas about breaking up the Deutsche Bahn, as proposed by the Greens, among others. “Cheating as a new beginning is simply wrong and unfair,” said the economic politician to the news magazine Der Spiegel. Bartol was reacting to a broad alliance of private rail operators, the rail union GDL, the construction industry and the Federal Association of Consumers, which this week had called for a far-reaching rail reform and thus supported the ideas of the Green parliamentary group.
The Greens are calling for a federal infrastructure company for the rail network and hope that this will result in more investments in the rail network and additional competition. Bartol also campaigned for reforms at Deutsche Bahn. However, he refused to separate. This would “paralyze the expansion of the railways with restructuring for years and cause considerable uncertainty among employees in the group”.
