BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) has spoken out in favor of administering the entire expected vaccine from AstraZeneca as quickly as possible. “If 1.7 million cans of Astrazeneca are delivered over the weekend in the middle of the third wave, it makes a lot of sense for the protection of the individual and for all of us if these 1.7 million cans are inoculated as quickly as possible,” said Spahn am Thursday in Berlin. “We are in the third wave and should protect everyone we can protect – as soon as possible.”
Germany’s top medical doctor Andreas Gassen thinks the vaccine is “still safe,” as he said. Even if he was under 60, he would personally have no concerns about being vaccinated with it, said the head of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV). Gassen is 58. “The side effects are rare,” he said. According to a recommendation by the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko), Astrazeneca is generally only used in Germany for people aged 60 and over. With 2.7 million Astrazeneca doses administered, 31 suspected cases of cerebral vein thrombosis were reported, nine of which were fatal.
Gassen said that certain rheumatism drugs or anti-baby pills were given “risks of the same severity in significantly higher magnitudes” on the package inserts. “Nobody makes a big bohei,” said the KBV boss. “Take Viagra, there are completely different side effects.” For the general practitioners, who are now starting the corona vaccinations on a large scale, it is no problem to educate people about Astrazeneca. “General practitioners are used to patients asking them.” The general practitioners would stick to the Stiko recommendation.
Spahn said: “We have 24, 25 million people in Germany over 60.” About 15 million cans of Astrazeneca are expected in the second quarter. Sufficient people would like to accept vaccination protection. “Because the protection is good.” He himself would in principle also be vaccinated with Astrazeneca, said Spahn. “Yes, if it was my turn.” As with other health issues, he would clarify the matter with his doctor beforehand.
The millions of people with the Astrazeneca first vaccination would be vaccinated just like everyone else, Spahn promised. The background is that the Stiko first wants to decide how it should be with the second vaccination for under 60-year-olds. “We will ensure that every German citizen who wants to get full vaccination protection and a vaccination schedule that guarantees this full vaccination protection, even if we start a new vaccination schedule,” said Spahn./bw/sam/jr/DP/ stw
