BERLIN (Dow Jones) – Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn expects that around 60 percent of the German population could be vaccinated against the coronavirus by the end of summer. The CDU politician said on ZDF on Monday evening that such an amount of effective vaccination doses could then be expected. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers vaccination coverage for 60 to 70 percent of the population to be necessary in order to contain the pandemic through herd immunity.
Spahn also emphasized that the vaccine from the pharmaceutical companies Biontech and Pfizer should be approved by the European Medicines Agency EMA as soon as possible after all data have been checked.
“Our goal is that there is approval before Christmas and that we can then start vaccinating this year – here in Germany too,” said Spahn in the heute-journal In the end, we only make the difference in this pandemic if as many people as possible get vaccinated. “That is why a proper approval makes more sense than an emergency approval. With the vaccination, it will be right in the new year go off.
“As of today, we can expect 12 to 13 million cans in the first quarter,” said Spahn. However, if there were additional approvals for vaccines such as those from the pharmaceutical companies Astrazeneca or Johnson & Johnson, then additional vaccine doses would also be available. That is realistic, but not certain, as there can always be setbacks in vaccine development. What is important, however, is that safety must always come first.
He rejected fears that the earlier start of vaccination in Great Britain and the USA could lead to a shortage of vaccines in Germany.
“We have contracts as the European Union, Great Britain has contracts, the United States have contracts and everyone has just secured appropriate quantities for the first quarter in these contracts. But I can assure you that something will not work because the USA has approval earlier from our contracts then somehow away or will be delivered earlier elsewhere, “said Spahn on ZDF.
