BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Households with poor internet connections are to receive vouchers worth 500 euros for a satellite connection, according to Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer. “Nationwide, we could supply around 200,000 households with fast internet overnight in this way and thus enable them to digitally participate,” said the CSU politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group (Thursday). In the corona pandemic, extremely slow internet is a problem, especially with regard to home office or distance learning.
The vouchers could go to households with an Internet speed of less than 10 megabits per second and for whom no expansion is planned. For comparison: around 95 percent of all households in Germany have connections with more than 30 megabits per second, as the newspapers reported with reference to data from the Ministry of Transport. The voucher of 500 euros corresponds roughly to the cost of purchasing and installing a satellite connection. Usage costs of around 50 to 100 euros per month are not covered./cpe/DP/stk
