BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The union of German train drivers is demanding more skills for train attendants so that the mask requirement can be better enforced on trains. This is currently not so easy, said chairman Claus Weselsky on Thursday. “Our colleagues outside on the trains have no leverage.” The mask requirement must be included in the conditions of carriage and thus in the house rules of the railway.
The railway refused. Such isolated solutions led to a confusing patchwork quilt. “Fines are the right way for the unteachable,” said board member Berthold Huber. He supported the approach of Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, which introduced fines. In North Rhine-Westphalia they should be there without warning.
In Berlin, the union presented a study published in June on the year 2018, according to which train drivers and train attendants are increasingly suffering physical attacks. Against this background, it is not easy for them to enforce the mask requirement.
The railway emphasized that the majority of passengers wore the masks consistently. Refusals could be punished consistently with the fine regulation together with the federal police. This is the right strategy, especially to protect employees.
Weselsky told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (Thursday), overall, the train attendants registered a more lax use of mouth and nose protection – in addition to “many sensible passengers who wear their masks”. But they demanded that the train attendants enforce the mask requirement for everyone else. “Our people are getting caught between all fronts,” criticized the unionist.
The railway wants to enforce compliance with the mask requirement with references if necessary. According to the group, such references are already possible for passengers who stubbornly refuse. If passengers refused to put on the mask after repeated requests, the passenger would be asked to get off the train at the next stop, said a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior – if necessary, the federal police would come and report violations as well./wn/DP/jha
