BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The number of new corona infections in Germany continued to fall over the weekend – as did the number of deaths. According to the RKI, the value of new infections reported within seven days per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) fell to around 57 nationwide by Sunday morning. In two federal states – Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Wrttemberg – the incidence was below 50. However, there are still drastic differences between different districts.
Within 24 hours, the German health authorities reported 8354 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) by Saturday and 6114 new corona infections by Sunday. In the previous week there were 10,485 infections by Saturday and 8,616 infections by Sunday. The number of reported deaths in connection with the Sars-CoV-2 virus was 769 at the weekend – the previous weekend it was 920. The recorded numbers are usually lower on weekends, partly because less testing and reporting is done.
The previous high of 1,244 newly reported deaths was reached on January 14th. The highest number of new infections registered within 24 hours was reached on December 18 at 33,777 – but it contained 3,500 late reports.
The seven-day incidence continued to fall to 57.4 by Sunday – its previous high of 197.6 was reached on December 22nd. With Baden-Wrttemberg (48.5) and Rhineland-Palatinate (46.6), two federal states were below the mark of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days on Sunday. All other federal states had values below 100, the highest incidence had tharringes with 97.6.
The differences between the districts are much clearer: The Bavarian districts of Tirschenreuth with almost 310 and Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge with 230, followed by Wesermarsch in Lower Saxony (221) had by far the highest incidence. The lowest values were recorded in the urban districts of Schweinfurt and Mnster with just under 6 and 11, as well as Zweibrcken (12).
Keeping the incidence below 50 had been the political goal for months. At the announcement on Wednesday the federal government and the federal states agreed on an incidence value of 35 as a guide for possible easing.
In total, the RKI has counted 2,334,561 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (as of February 14, 00:00). The actual total number should be significantly higher since many infections are not detected. The RKI stated the number of people recovered to be around 2,119,100. The total number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 64,960.
According to the RKI situation report on Sunday, the nationwide seven-day R-value was 0.88 (previous day 0.90). This means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 88 more people. The value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection rate subsides./dul/waw/DP/zb
