BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The final of the U21 European Championship with the victory of the German footballers was a ratings success for the TV broadcaster ProSieben. An average of 4.75 million people saw the 1-0 win against Portugal on Sunday evening. According to the broadcaster, this corresponds to a market share of 16.5 percent.
For ProSieben this is a top rate for U21 broadcasts, but more people watch football on ARD and ZDF. For comparison: The defeat in the final two years ago on ARD was seen by 9.09 million people. The market share at that time was 26.9 percent.
The audience ratings for the TV broadcasts of the finals were consistently above the one million mark for several hours on Sunday from noon. The highest value of the finals had already been given on Saturday, when athletics attracted 2.24 million viewers in front of the television, which, according to the ZDF, corresponds to a market share of 10.6 percent.
The game of the German national ice hockey team for bronze at the World Cup in Riga, which was lost 6-1 to the USA, was watched by an average of 930,000 spectators on Sport1. That corresponds to a market share of 6.5 percent. The semi-finals of the Germans, which were narrowly lost 1: 2 against Finland on Saturday, gave Sport1 the second-best values of an ice hockey game in the history of the station: At the top there were 2.71 million, an average of 1.77 million viewers.
