(2nd paragraph newly inserted)

LONDON (dpa-AFX) – The influential British government advisor Dominic Cummings has left Downing Street with a large cardboard box in his hands. The 48-year-old advisor to Prime Minister Boris Johnson left the British seat of government in London, heavily loaded, as can be seen on photos and videos. He will be leaving his post with immediate effect, the BBC reported.

Several media reported, citing unnamed sources, that Cummings will continue to work for the government until mid-December – according to a tweet from BBC reporter Laura Kuenssberg, but only from home on individual projects.

Cummings himself had initially only indirectly confirmed his withdrawal from Downing Street on Friday – and referred to one of his earlier blog posts. His position on the blog in January has not changed, he told the BBC. In the post, Cummings had written that he hoped to make himself “largely superfluous” by the end of 2020.

A bitter power struggle between different camps has raged behind the scenes of the London government headquarters in recent days. Cummings was seen as a puller in the government seat. He was one of the powerful Brexiteers who had been setting the tone on Downing Street for some time.

On Wednesday, the close Cummings confidante and communications chief Lee Cain had already resigned after a discussed promotion encountered violent headwinds. According to the reports, Cain also left Downing Street on Friday with immediate effect instead of the end of the year./swe/DP/he
