WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – According to a widely observed model, a total of around 208,000 people in the US could die from a coronavirus infection by November. That would be almost 80,000 more deaths than currently. If 95 percent of people always wear masks in public, the number of victims could be significantly lower by November at around 163,000, said researchers at the IHME Institute at the University of Washington in Seattle. “Those who refuse to wear a mask put their lives, their families, their friends, and their communities at risk,” said Institute Director Christopher Murray on Tuesday (local time).
In mid-June, the institute had already expected around 200,000 deaths by October. In view of the occasionally falling number of infections, the researchers then corrected their forecast to around 175,000. The renewed increase in the forecast was due to the sharp rise in new infections in the southern United States and the outlook for the fall months, IHME explained. In September and October, a significant increase in the number of corona deaths is expected at the beginning of the flu season, it was said.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, there are almost three million known coronavirus infections in the United States. On Tuesday alone there were around 60,000 new infections, more than ever before in one day. The pathogen Sars-CoV-2 can trigger the lung disease Covid-19. To date, more than 131,000 people have died in the United States from or related to an infection./jbz/DP/mis
