VILNIUS (dpa-AFX) – In Lithuania, the number of new corona infections has reached a peak for the third day in a row. According to the health authority in Vilnius, 2848 positive tests were reported within 24 hours in the Baltic EU country on Saturday – after 2514 and 2450 cases the days before. In total, more than 72,000 people have tested positive for Corona in Lithuania since the pandemic began. The Baltic state has almost three million inhabitants.
Lithuania recorded a rapid increase in corona numbers in the autumn. According to the EU authority ECDC, the development in the Baltic Sea state is currently significantly worse than in Germany. To contain the pandemic, the government in Vilnius has imposed a partial lockdown and strict corona protective measures. The effect of the restrictions has so far been limited. The rules should therefore be reviewed in the coming week./awe/DP/mis
