PARIS (dpa-AFX) – Against the background of the affair surrounding the Russian oppositionist Alexej Navalny, France has postponed a ministerial meeting with Russia. The so-called French-Russian cooperation council on security issues should take place at a later date, said the spokeswoman for the Paris Foreign Ministry on Tuesday evening in Paris. The brief explanation referred to – unspecified – “current circumstances”. The postponement was therefore discussed with the Russian side.
The foreign and defense ministers of the two countries usually meet in this diplomatic format for deliberations. According to media reports, the next meeting was planned for this Monday (September 14th). The Foreign Ministry did not provide any information about the appointment.
Only at the end of last week, Berlin and Paris jointly asked Russia to investigate the poisoning of Navalny. The federal government is considering it after investigations by a special laboratory armed forces has been proven beyond doubt that Navalny was poisoned with the military neurotoxin Novichok. The opposition politician suddenly fell into a coma on a flight in Russia on August 20 and was later transferred to the Charit in Berlin at the insistence of his family./cb/DP/jha
