According to the digital association Bitkom, almost every second German (46 percent) has taken out insurance via the Internet. Simple products that require little effort are often preferred. This includes e.g. Cancellation insurance and vehicle liability insurance. These are the results of a survey in which 1,004 people over the age of 18 participated. Accordingly, there are clear differences in age groups: 57 percent of 18- to 64-year-olds already took out insurance online, while there are only 15 percent of seniors aged 65 and over who have already taken advantage of this option.
Bitkom President Achim Berg commented on the online options in a press release as follows: “In times of limited contacts, classic insurance sales via home visits or branch advice are difficult anyway. The following ranking includes the top 5 most popular insurance policies that you can take out online. The information is based on a Bitkom 2020 survey with 1,004 participants over the age of 18.
5th place: accident insurance
Accident insurance took fifth place with 18 percent of the participants.
4th place: travel health insurance abroad
19 percent of the participants have already taken out travel insurance online, which puts them in fourth place.
3rd place: legal expenses insurance
Legal protection insurance comes in third place with 25 percent and thus the bronze medal in the top 5 ranking of the most popular online insurance companies.
2nd place: car insurance
32 percent of the participants have already taken out car insurance online, which puts them in second place in the top five.
1st place: travel cancellation insurance
First place of the most popular insurance policies that can be taken out online is taken out by travel cancellation insurance and thus receives the gold medal.
Improved usability means increased demand
Berg also attests that other insurance companies have great potential by noting that there is an increase in usability quality in order to increase demand: “There is already a not insignificant group of customers who would also like to take out more complex products online.
