Seoul (Reuters) – North Korea wants to expand its military power and nuclear arsenal.
“We must do everything we can to increase the deterrence of nuclear wars even further, while at the same time building the strongest military capabilities,” said President Kim Jong Un. He made a statement on Wednesday at the end of the eighth congress of his Communist Party, which the state news agency KCNA reported.
The congress, which took place in the capital Pyongyang for eight days, is the first in 2016 and only the second since 1980. On Tuesday, Kim was elected general secretary of his party, consolidating his power.
Since Kim announced a moratorium on the testing of intercontinental ballistic missile testing in 2018, he has repeatedly called for further nuclear weapons production. A number of smaller missiles were tested. The deliberations between North Korea and the US about halting the North Korean nuclear and missile program in return for an easing of US sanctions have been stalled for some time.
