New lawsuits: USA before power struggle for the White House – Trump gets support from Republicans – US attorney general allows investigation into election fraud | message
The elected US Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she would prevent further initiatives by the previous US government in health policy. A legal push by Republicans against President Barack Obama’s health care reform is a “blatant attempt to reverse the will of the people,” Harris said on Tuesday, adding, “The President-elect (Joe Biden) and I cannot allow this to happen.”
Before Biden’s address on health policy, Harris said he clearly won the election a week ago. Biden announced that when he took office in January, he would ensure that all Americans received comprehensive health care at low cost as soon as possible.
Biden sees no obstacle in the preparations for his presidency in the outgoing government’s lack of recognition of his election victory. “I just think, frankly, that it is humiliating” that Donald Trump will not admit his defeat in the election, said Biden in Wilmington, Delaware. “How can I say that tactfully? I think it won’t help the president’s legacy.” He promised that he would be able to name the first candidates for his cabinet before Thanksgiving on November 26th.
Trump initially did not appear in public, but on Tuesday he sent a series of tweets in capital letters in which he again spoke of abuse in the counting of votes without any evidence and declared: “We will win.”
Trump is building on the support of his Republican Party. Only four Republican senators have so far congratulated Biden on the win. Mitch McConnell, who was confirmed on Tuesday in his role as Republican majority leader in the Senate, sees no cause for concern in Trump’s stance: “This is not unusual. It should not be alarming,” he said on Tuesday. If the states had officially confirmed their results, the 538 electorate would choose a winner. “And that person will be sworn in on January 20th.”
Trump’s Attorney General William Barr allowed prosecutors to investigate allegations of election fraud before the final results were announced. Such proceedings should be initiated if there are “clear and apparently credible allegations of irregularities” that may have affected the election results in a state, Barr’s letter to prosecutors said, according to US media. It is also about the allegation of inadmissible voices in the US state of Nevada, reported the TV station NBC on Tuesday.
Otherwise, public prosecutors are only allowed to take action once the final results are available. After the election on November 3rd, this could take days or weeks, depending on the legal situation in the individual states. The states must have reported their certified final results to Washington by December 8th.
Trump’s lawyers made a fresh attempt to overturn the results of the Pennsylvania presidential election. The state, with 20 votes for the December 14 electoral assembly, played a key role in Biden’s victory. One of the lawsuits in Pennsylvania is Trump’s claim that Republicans were denied the opportunity to watch a large portion of the vote count closely enough. Republicans also argue that when it comes to postal voting, some districts with a high percentage of Democrats have broken the rules and the system as a whole is prone to fraud.
Trump and his lawyers have so far mainly criticized the fact that in Pennsylvania, ballot papers sent by post are still taken into account, which arrived up to three days after the election date. They were able to obtain a decision from the Supreme Court that these postal voting documents must be stored and counted separately. However, it would not help Trump if even all of these ballot papers were not considered. Biden leads in Pennsylvania with more than 45,000 votes, while only about 7,800 ballots arrived late.
Republican Party leader Ronna McDaniel admitted that she did not know whether legal action would be enough to turn the results in Trump’s favor. Trump’s spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany insinuated the Democrats in a press conference that this fraud would approve. The TV broadcaster Fox News, which has been on the side of the president in recent years, then switched off because the allegations were not substantiated.
Biden was declared the winner on Saturday based on surveys and forecasts by the US media. On Tuesday he phoned Chancellor Angela Merkel and promised her that he would like to strengthen relations with Germany. Biden has expressed his interest in working closely with Merkel on common challenges. This included fighting the corona pandemic, protecting the climate and reviving the global economy, according to a statement by the Biden team. According to the German government spokesman Steffen Seibert, Merkel spoke out in the telephone conversation with Biden for a close and trusting cooperation.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Biden on Tuesday night. Both would have emphasized the importance of the “unique partnership” between the US and Canada, it was said afterwards. The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also congratulated Biden. Ankara is determined to work closely with the US leadership, said Erdogan.
