MAINZ (dpa-AFX) – Because of frequent rainfalls and snowmelt, the Moselle and Rhine swell significantly – flooding could occur. For the Moselle, Saar and Sauer, the Rhineland-Palatinate flood forecast center announced on Thursday that water levels would initially rise until Sunday. “At the Trier gauge, an increase of up to 900 centimeters is possible,” it said. On the Saar, the water level at Fremersdorf could reach around 500 centimeters.
The German Weather Service (DWD) also spoke of a lot of rain in the coming days and thaw in the low mountain ranges. “The rivers are getting full,” said a meteorologist.
The normal level in Trier is 3.50 meters – from 6.95 meters, navigation on the Moselle is stopped here. From a water level in Trier of around eight meters there are usually first floods in communities on the Middle Moselle. A water level is a relative water level measured from an arbitrarily defined point./jaa/DP/mis
