Not many details are known about the first sustainable collection, but one thing is certain: Matchbox attaches great importance to teaching children about sustainability and focuses on electric and hybrid vehicles.
“On the journey to a better future” – this is the slogan under which Mattel announces and advertises the developments at Matchbox: Mattel not only wants to use environmentally friendly plastics for its production by 2030, but also wants to bring sustainability closer to children . After the Mattel brand Fisher-Price had already switched its production by the end of last year, the next step is now to be taken at Matchbox.
The change will come in 2022, but new packaging this year
Roberto Stanichi, Global Head of Vehicles at Mattel, stated in a press release from the company in mid-April 2021: “Since the beginnings of the modern die-cast car, Matchbox has been using design and innovation to allow children to playfully interact with the real world around them connect […]. Matchbox is committed to using 100% recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastics to do our part in addressing the growing environmental problems we face today and empowering the next generation of Matchbox fans to move us towards a sustainable one Accompanying the future “. In addition to the use of sustainable materials, Matchbox is also intended to reduce energy consumption, waste production and CO2 emissions in the factories – part of this project, according to the company’s website, is about 99 percent of transport no longer by plane, but by Handling freighters.
Further measures are “easily removable electronics”, the so-called “How 2 Recycle” labels, which are intended to guide customers in disposing of the products, as well as new packaging for the Matchbox toys: plastic gives way to cardboard and paper; the purchase no longer through the packaging. The deadline for the major changes is January 1, 2022, and plastic-free packaging will be introduced this year.
The first sustainable model: Matchbox presents the Tesla Roadster
In the Matchbox announcement, Mattel assures that the brand’s “characteristic sense of adventure” will remain in spite of all the innovations and is introducing some of the new, environmentally friendly models. It is noticeable that the new product lines focus on electric and hybrid vehicles – in line with the announcement to bring sustainability closer to children. Among other things, there should be a five-pack with electric and hybrid vehicles, the Honda Clarity and that Electric car International eStar.
So far, however, the Tesla Roadster has been presented as a star among the announcements, which will be shown before the actual Tesla premiere of Matchbox on a scale of 1:64 as part of the new “Basic Car Collection”. The Tesla Roadster will be the brand’s first environmentally friendly model and will be built from 99 percent recycled materials: According to the press release, the body is made of recycled zinc, the base plate and tires made of recycled plastic and only the axles (one percent) made of stainless steel.
Natural Capital Partners: official certificate for climate neutrality
The Tesla Roadster, like all other sustainable Matchbox vehicles built to date, has been officially certified as climate neutral by Natural Capital Partners. The press release states: “The emissions specifications are used to preserve grasslands in Colorado and Montana”. Matchbox says it sells over 40 million model cars annually – the changeover of the brand to climate-neutral production is therefore a big step towards climate-neutrality for the entire group for Mattel. Which of the other brands – including Hot Wheels and Barbie – will switch to production next is still unknown.
