PARIS / MNCHEN (dpa-AFX) – The French head of state Emmanuel Macron has brought a donation of 13 million doses of corona vaccine to Africa into play. “If we, Europeans, Americans, can deliver these 13 million cans as quickly as possible, that would be extremely valuable,” he said on Friday in a video link at the Munich Security Conference. In total, that’s only 0.43 percent of the cans ordered. According to Macron, the aim was to vaccinate the six and a half million nurses on the African continent.
The seven major economic powers (G7), including France, announced on Friday an additional billions for the global vaccination campaign. Macron warned: “If we announce billions today to deliver cans in six months, in eight months, in a year, our African friends (…) will buy cans from the Chinese, from the Russians or directly from other laboratories” .
With a delivery of vaccination doses, the West would have a presence in Africa, Macron said. If one wants to achieve effective multilateralism, be it on the Europeans and Americans, poor and emerging countries to enable tests, vaccinations and treatments as quickly as possible./rbo/DP/he
