Tesla delivers self-driving functions via beta software
In October, the US electric car manufacturer Tesla released a new version as part of a beta program for the vehicle software, which gives selected Tesla owners access to the long-awaited self-driving function. This was reported by the news portal “Electrek”, which specializes in news about Tesla and other suppliers of electric vehicles. With the update, some users should already have the opportunity to have their Tesla vehicle controlled fully automatically. At the end of October, Tesla immediately delivered another update, with which the automatic operation now works better, according to experience reports. According to the Tesla CEO, the participants in the test program are Elon Musk about experienced and careful drivers, as he revealed on his Twitter profile on the occasion of the beta release.

Testers praise beta program on social media
In social networks, users rave about the exclusively activated function. With interventions, Musk referred to the fact that although the function is referred to as fully autonomous driving, the driver must be ready at all times to intervene in the traffic situation. This also means that both hands must be permanently on the steering wheel. However, Tesla can benefit from these interventions in the behavior of artificial intelligence by analyzing them and using them to expand its neural networks, according to “Electrek”.
Software leads to dangerous traffic situations
Not all participants in the beta program seem enthusiastic about the software update. As reported by “CNN Business”, the beta tester Brandon McGowan showed in various videos on his YouTube channel which problems the driver assistant is still causing. According to McGowan’s records, his Tesla was having trouble identifying the exact road layout and was almost on the median. Other participants in the test program also report similar failures. For example, models that have installed the beta version of the operating software are said to have run over red lights, just missed parked cars and exceeded speed limits. In addition, some of them are said to have turned into the wrong lanes. In another video, McGowan also stated that a safety mechanism, automatic emergency braking, had to be deactivated in order to participate in the program, but he was willing to accept the risk. “I want people to be able to have very good stable software and secure software once it’s ready,” said McGowan.
One of the beta testers also stated that, due to a confidentiality agreement in the media, he was not allowed to comment directly on the self-driving function of the electric car. Nevertheless, Tesla fans share their experiences with the test software on YouTube and Twitter. CEO Musk thanked the testers for the public feedback.
Error reduction as the ultimate goal
According to Musk, Tesla wants to roll out a new update every five to ten days via the beta program until the nationwide release of the service in the USA in the late year. Nevertheless, it cannot be assumed that the software will run completely error-free in the near future, as Musk further explained: “There will always be errors, but at some point the probability of errors increases [bei Tesla] be far less than the average person. ”

According to “Electrek” Musk previously stated that this goal should be achieved by the end of 2020, but the company, based in Palo Alto, California, will no longer be able to meet this schedule. Even if the final version of the software appears in December, users still have to act carefully.
