BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Left chairwoman Katja Kipping has criticized the police’s handling of the “lateral thinking” demonstration in Leipzig. “As far as I know today, there is an absolute failure of the Saxon police leadership,” she told the editorial network Germany (RND / Sonntag). “Anyone who still had doubts, yesterday showed: The right-wing extremist scene uses the lateral thinking demos to mobilize. Anyone who participates in lateral thinking after all this should know who is playing into their hands.”
In Leipzig on Saturday at least 20,000 people from all over Germany protested against the federal government’s corona measures. Since many people did not comply with the Corona rules, the police broke up the meeting. Thousands resisted and marched on the inner city ring. Several politicians then criticized the way the police handled the demonstrators and called for the operation to be clarified.
The city had actually wanted to move the demo to the outskirts to protect against infection. The administrative court in Leipzig had confirmed this, the OVG decided differently: It allowed a rally with 16,000 participants. Elevators remained prohibited./stz/DP/zb
