NEW DELHI (dpa-AFX) – India is the second country in the world after the USA to cross the line of ten million coronavirus infected people. That comes from the data published on Saturday by the Indian Ministry of Health. However, the increase in both the number of infected and the number of fatalities appears to be slowing. According to the information, 27,022 new infections have been registered since Friday – the total number rose to 10,004,893. The number of deaths rose within 24 hours by 338 to 144,789.
Since December 14, the threshold of 30,000 new infections per day has always been undercut, and fewer than 400 victims have been reported daily since December 12. However, high-ranking officials warned that sustained improvement would not be taken for granted, as an overwhelming proportion of the approximately 1.3 billion residents are still vulnerable to the virus. “Things can change and escalate quickly,” said India’s Covid-19 task force chief Vinod Kumar Paul, citing the current situation in some European countries as an example.
The Indian government is currently preparing to vaccinate around 300 million people, which is due to start in January. Three vaccine candidates have applied for emergency approval from the Indian Medicines Agency. According to government officials, a decision on one or more candidates is expected in the coming weeks. /Su/DP/zb
