Be it old books that were read a long time ago and now only serve as dust catchers. A stamp collection that was once emulated with dedication. Or children’s and baby things that the little ones have outgrown. The range of unused items offered on online marketplaces is limitless.

Earn money with sorted things out – or become a bargain hunter yourself

There are many reasons why buying used goods can be worthwhile. Often the quality of the used products is not really worse than that of new products. Used products also cost less and can therefore develop into a real bargain. Many see the used market as an opportunity to gain access to high-quality things that are too expensive when new. From a ecological point of view, buying second-hand conserves natural resources and is therefore particularly climate-friendly. After all, something does not have to be produced again if it is bought used. In return, there is a chance for sellers to make money from old, unused items in the household. Quickly take a photo with your mobile phone, give it a title and description, set the price and upload it. Especially the purchase with subsequent preparation and immediate resale is a popular business model of many platforms, in which the seller receives a purchase offer from the platform operator after scanning the barcode. Or you become a dealer yourself and create a sales offer.

These online marketplaces compete with eBay

One of the best known alternatives to eBay is Hood. Hood has no fees for private sellers. Commercial traders can choose from three different price packages of EUR 10.95, 16.95 or EUR 29.95 a month. Hood is characterized above all by its clarity and its wide range in almost all conceivable categories. As with eBay, there are auctions and buy it now options.

The American platform Etsy is suitable for creative, handmade vintage products. A large number of the products on Etsy are unique and only exist in very small quantities. Some of the sellers on Etsy are not real dealers, but rather make them as a hobby to earn some extra money on the side. Sellers have to pay 0.17 euros per item for the posting. In addition, Etsy has a 3.5 percent stake in the sale and there is a payment processing fee of 4 percent plus 0.30 euros.

The online portal Shpock is intended to represent the classic flea market, which can be reached at any time from the mobile device. The name Shpock means something like “Shop In Your Pocket”. The platform scores with an uncomplicated purchase and sale on both the seller and buyer side. It is completely free. There are no fees. If you use the app, the location function of the smartphone only shows items nearby. The location can also be entered manually without location.

The Quoka platform works in the same way as eBay classified ads. Here, too, the search is location-based and ads can be created completely free of charge. Here, too, almost the entire product range is represented, from advertisements for used cars to electronic items and animal care offers.

The online marketplace Fairmondo takes a slightly different approach than the portals just mentioned. Responsible consumption is a top priority at Fairmondo. The focus here is on the fair trade of goods. That is why products from the “fair”, “ko” and “small & noble” range go above all through the virtual shop counter. Fairmondo only retains 1 percent of a successful transaction to donate to an anti-corruption initiative.

At Avocadostore, where fair trade is also very much in the foreground, the concept of sustainability is strongly internalized. Only those retailers are allowed to sell their goods here who can justify the sustainability of each of their products. The platform awards ratings such as “raw materials from organic farming”, “Made in Germany” or “vegan”. Above all books, drugstore products, clothing articles and sustainable household products are offered here. However, sellers have to pay a setup fee of 65 euros, a monthly basic fee of 15 euros and a sales commission of 17 percent per item sold to the platform.
