The navigation function of today’s smartphones makes it possible to keep your orientation at all times – in almost any place in the world. It doesn’t matter whether you are in your home country or in Hawaii. With the navigation apps on the mobile phone you can usually reach the desired destination anywhere in the world.
The veteran of digital map guidance is Google Maps – the map app of the search engine giant. Google Maps has been available to users free of charge for 15 years and is the most widely used smartphone navigation app.
But other map apps also convince with useful features and can be used as an alternative to Google Maps. You can read about them below.
The first Google Maps alternative comes from in-house. Google bought the Waze navigation app back in 2013 and has continued to develop it since then. This is an application for street navigation that not only informs users about the route but also other relevant traffic information such as traffic jams, road works and speed cameras. Petrol stations, restaurants and hotels can also be displayed, among other things.
With regard to the traffic situation, Waze obtains the necessary information from the user community itself. Accidents, traffic jams or police checks are reported by Waze users and stored in the system. The information provided is then either confirmed or rejected by other users.
The app can be used free of charge and can be used for iOS and Android can be downloaded. However, offline use is not possible – that is, there must always be a connection to the Internet.
Apple Maps represents probably the biggest competitor of Google Maps. Addresses of sights as well as restaurants, banks and many other destinations can be determined and controlled with it. With the route options, the user is then offered five options for how the destination can be reached. In addition to regular navigation for your own car, the options “fastest footpath”, “public transport”, “bicycle routes” and “with a taxi app” are also available.
Apple Maps is also free and offers features similar to Google Maps – however, the application can only be used with Apple’s own iOS smartphone operating system for iPhones.
NavMii has maps of over 190 countries and allows the user to download them to their smartphone so that services can also be used offline if necessary. NavMii also obtains traffic information on the basis of user information and thus provides information about traffic jams, speed cameras and speed limits, among other things.
In addition, descriptions and reviews of hotels, restaurants and attractions can be viewed thanks to the integration of TripAdvisor.
Navigation with voice output is only possible here for a fee of 3.31 euros. In addition, advertisements appear again and again, which can be removed for an additional fee of 1.74 euros.
The app can be used on iOS and Android.
Specially designed map apps for bicycles, motorcycles and the like follow.
With Komoot you can plan bike routes through forests, cities and the great outdoors. The app provides information about altitude, obstacles and the difficulty of the route. In addition, a community provides information and recommendations for the selected route.
There are routes for mountain bikers, racing cyclists and hobby cyclists – but the map app is also interesting for hikers.
The app can be used on iOS and Android and offers premium functions that are subject to a fee.
For those who frequently ride a motorcycle, Calimoto could be a good alternative to Google Maps. The app is specially designed for motorcycle tours, so that you can explicitly search for winding routes. Randomly selected routes can also be driven using the app.
The app can be downloaded for iOS and Android and also offers paid upgrades.
The ADAC camping and parking space guide
If you are traveling with a camping trailer and are looking for a suitable parking space, you can use the ADAC camping app. The application provides information on around 17,000 parking spaces and campsites and controls them automatically.
The app can be purchased in the iOS and Android store for 8.99 euros each.
