Free cancellation: Cancellation: When to expect cancellation costs and when to cancel free of charge | message

Why do I have to pay cancellation fees?

If a traveler cancels a booking, it can happen that he has to pay cancellation costs. Cancellation costs can also be seen as compensation for the tour operator. The tour operator is entitled to compensation, as a legally binding contract was concluded with the travel booking, which is associated with services. If a person later withdraws from the booked trip, he must compensate the organizer because he does not fulfill his contractual obligations. The organizer should always be contacted as soon as possible to cancel the trip. If you want to be on the safe side, inform the organizer in writing.

The amount of the cancellation fee depends on the costs incurred by the tour operator. But the holidaymaker does not have to pay cancellation costs in every case in the event of a travel cancellation, there are guidelines for this. A distinction is made between official and personal reasons.

In these cases, cancellation fees apply

Cancellation costs are usually due for personal reasons for canceling the trip. This includes resignations due to illness, accidents, separation from the travel partner, the death of a family member, vaccination intolerance and pregnancy complications.

Here you do not have to pay anything for a travel cancellation

However, there are also various scenarios in which there are no cancellation fees. There are also ways of avoiding paying the cancellation fees. In principle, tour operators cannot charge cancellation fees if there are official reasons for canceling the trip. Official reasons are acute travel warnings, outbreaks of war, epidemics and natural disasters such as earthquakes or a hurricane. Furthermore, travelers can withdraw from the planned trip free of charge if there is unplanned additional effort on the trip that is not their own fault. Additional expenses include, for example, additional costs of over 50 percent if the travel price rises. Or changes to the trip such as longer flight times, changed travel routes and changes to accommodation that are not in the interests of the holidaymaker. In these cases, travelers can cancel the trip; the cancellation is free of charge.

If there are no official but personal reasons for canceling the trip, the holidaymaker has two other options to avoid the cancellation costs. Travelers have the option of taking out travel cancellation insurance from various providers, the duration and scope of insurance is up to each individual. For example, there are travel cancellation insurances in which the traveler is fully insured for personal travel cancellations and does not have to pay any cancellation fees in the event that occurs. Other, usually cheaper, options are partial travel cancellation insurance, in which travelers do not have to pay the full amount of the cancellation fees for personal reasons, but only have to pay their own contribution.

Ultimately, in the vast majority of situations, it is also possible to appoint a substitute and have the trip rebooked to this person. If someone is found who would like to travel instead, only rebooking costs and no cancellation fees will be charged. editorial team
