PARIS (dpa-AFX) – France’s Prime Minister Jean Castex would be vaccinated with AstraZeneca if the European Medicines Agency gives the vaccine the green light again. “So far I had decided to get vaccinated when it was my turn and not to get a free ticket,” said the 55-year-old on Wednesday evening the broadcaster BFM TV. In view of what is happening with Astrazeneca, it is wise to get vaccinated very quickly in order to give people a feeling of security, Castex continues.
Germany and numerous other EU countries such as France had recently suspended vaccinations with the Astrazeneca corona vaccine. The background to this were reports of blood clots in connection with the vaccination process. As soon as the suspension is lifted, he will be vaccinated with Astrazeneca, Castex also stressed on Twitter. Regarding the delay in vaccine deliveries, the head of government said to the European Union: “Europe must show its teeth.” The delays are not normal, Europe must ensure that the laboratories comply with the contractual obligations.
Castex also stressed that stricter measures for the greater Paris area were on the table. The situation there is “worrying and critical”. The city of Paris had recently resisted a weekend lockdown. This applies in Nice and Dunkerque (Dunkirk). There is no reason why measures should not be taken there that would also be used elsewhere, said Castex with a view to the greater Paris area.
A year ago, President Emmanuel Macron imposed the first strict lockdown in France. The country, in which around 67 million people live, has been hard hit by the corona pandemic. More than 91,000 deaths have been registered so far in connection with Corona./nau/DP/fba
