NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – The former lawyer of the US President Donald TrumpMichael Cohen has been released early because of the corona pandemic. “I’m so happy to be home and back with my family,” Cohen wrote on Twitter on Thursday. The 53-year-old arrived in his apartment in Manhattan wearing a face mask, as can be seen in the photos. Cohen was originally scheduled to serve a three-year sentence in a prison in Otisville, New York, until November 2021. The rest of his sentence is expected to be served at home, US media said, citing an informed source.
Cohen pleaded guilty to several crimes in 2018, including false testimony before Congress and violations of campaign funding laws. The latter was a hush money payment that Cohen said he had executed on Trump’s behalf. The ex-lawyer was then convicted in December 2018.
According to US media reports, Cohen has requested a release from custody for health reasons. Accordingly, the prison had been infected with the novel corona virus. Prisons in the United States are considered to be a particular focus of the virus’s spread. As a result, according to the “New York Times”, more than 2,500 prisoners had been released early.
Cohen has worked for Trump for more than a decade and has been a central figure in several affairs about the President. He was often described as Trump’s “sweeper” until there was a break between the two. Cohen turned away from Trump and raised serious allegations against the President in court and the US Congress. / Lkl / gma / DP / he
