BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – In the discussion about a return to normal operation in schools in the midst of the corona pandemic, the FDP calls for further training for teachers in digital teaching during the remaining summer holidays. “In times of crisis for education, there can be no summer vacation for those responsible,” writes the education policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group, Thomas Sattelberger, in a position paper available to the editorial network Germany (RND, Wednesday). “The lesson-free time must be used primarily for planning the next school year,” it says, especially since this school year will also foreseeably be a mixture of face-to-face lessons at school and learning at home.
In the lesson-free period, teachers would have to learn “to teach students the best possible way in hybrid teaching models,” says Sattelberger in his “Germany-wide immediate program for summer school holidays”. This also requires better technical equipment for teachers. It is not acceptable for teachers to work “in the gray area of data protection law via private e-mail addresses on private end devices,” criticizes Sattelberger. “This summer all teachers will need to be equipped with digital devices, including software and email addresses.”
Sattelberger also demands better technical equipment for students from financially disadvantaged families. From autumn, digital end devices should be found in all school bags as naturally as notebooks, books or pencils.
Shortly before the end of the summer vacation in some federal states, skepticism remains high as to whether the planned return to normal operations at schools in the middle of the corona pandemic will succeed. Most recently, the German Teachers’ Association expressed concern that the schools were not adequately prepared for this./gma/DP/zb
