BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – In the fight against the corona pandemic, the EU states want common standards for rapid antigen tests. You need mutual recognition of the tests and their results, said EU Council leader Charles Michel on Thursday after video consultations with EU heads of state and government.
EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said the rapid tests would have to work in at least four out of five infected people. There are many different tests of different quality on the market, which is why a common EU framework is needed for the recognition of tests that should be used in addition to the more complex PCR tests. The EU Commission wants to evaluate the tests.
Von der Leyen also announced a pilot project for a digital return travel form, in which two EU countries initially participated. In addition, twelve other countries could take part because they already used a technically compatible form. Germany also already has a digital form that must be filled out when returning from trips abroad.
In order not to risk a third corona wave, the current restrictions should only be relaxed carefully and gradually, emphasized Michel and von der Leyen. It has been learned that loosening up too hastily has negative effects on the epidemiological situation, said von der Leyen. Therefore, the EU Commission will present a proposal for a step-by-step approach. “That will be very important to avoid the risk of another wave.” Michel said: “We all want to celebrate the festive season at the end of the year – of course.” / Wim / DP / he
