BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – EU citizens should in future be able to identify themselves online with an electronic identity card or passport. “We will present a proposal for this next year,” announced EU Commission Vice-President Margrethe Vestager in the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”. This should create an alternative way of identifying yourself on the Internet. Everyone would then have the option of logging in with their E-ID and no longer “opening a door to their entire world of data while using a service or offer”.
At the beginning of October, the EU heads of state and government asked the EU Commission to present a proposal for “European digital identification” by mid-2021. This should “put people in control of their online identities and data”. In addition, the E-ID should enable “access to public, private and cross-border digital services”. / Wim / DP / mis
