• Geely steps up electrification initiative
• New luxury EV brand Zeekr
• Ambitious plans
Although the Geely Group already has electric cars in its premium segment with Volvo and Polestar, an additional car brand has now been founded. The newly founded Zeekr Company Limited, based in China, is a joint venture between Geely Automobile Holdings and the parent company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, which have 51 and 49 percent stakes, respectively.
According to Geely Auto, it will be possible to reserve the first model of the new vehicle brand at this year’s “Auto Shanghai” exhibition, which will take place from April 21 to 28, and will then be delivered in the fourth quarter. At least one additional new electric vehicle is to be brought onto the market every year over the next five years. The aim is to first build up a certain market share on the home market before exploring export opportunities.
Lifetime software upgrades
In addition to performance and luxury, the focus should also be on updates with which the electric cars can also be optimized after the market launch. That is why Zeekr will use the SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) electric platform of the Geely Holding Group, which was presented in September 2020, and incorporate its own battery technologies, battery management systems and electric motor technologies.
Thanks to the use of these SEA technologies, Zeekr vehicles will be able to receive software upgrades through over-the-air upgrades throughout their life. The open source EV technology also enables the cars to have a range of up to 700 kilometers on one battery charge.
For production, Zeekr relies on a “light asset strategy”, i.e. it will not build its own and exclusive plants for the Zeekr brand. Instead, production by a contract manufacturer would be possible.
Zeekr ecosystem planned
Geely not only wants to develop e-cars, but wants to integrate end users into a newly created super ecosystem that also includes service and sales.
