BERLIN (Dow Jones) – The Federal Cabinet has decided on the gender equality strategy presented by Federal Minister for Family Affairs Franziska Giffey (SPD). This was announced by the Federal Press Office and the Ministry of Family Affairs in Berlin. With this, the government wants to promote equal opportunities for women and men in all areas of life.
In future, gender equality will be taken into account in the laws and funding programs of all ministries – for example in the areas of business, politics or science. The cross-departmental strategy is also intended to bundle contributions from the individual ministries into an overall strategy for the first time. Union and SPD are thus implementing a central promise from the coalition agreement.
In terms of content, the strategy is based on the recommendations of the Federal Government’s Second Equal Opportunities Report of 2017, according to the Ministry of Family Affairs. This calls for, for example, equalization of wages and benefits, better recognition of care work, which is mostly carried out by women, or easier return to work for women. The report also recommends switching spouse taxation to individual taxation.
