BREMEN (dpa-AFX) – Because of the increasing number of corona infections and deaths, the state of Bremen is also withdrawing the planned easing for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. This means that a maximum of five people from two households, plus children, are allowed to meet on the festive days. “We have to prevent our health system from being overloaded,” said Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) on Friday after a special session of the Senate.
The schools are to remain open, but the compulsory attendance will be lifted from next Wednesday until December 23rd. Schoolchildren can study at home until the Christmas holidays. The sale of take-away alcoholic beverages, such as a mug of mulled wine, will initially be banned from Monday.
In the opinion of the Bremen state government, older people urgently need better protection. “It has to be tested across the board,” said Bovenschulte. Rapid tests are needed for staff and visitors. According to the head of government, there are signs of a closure for the retail sector. For this, however, a nationwide regulation is needed. If businesses are closed, there must be economic compensation.
Health Senator Claudia Bernhard (Left Party) said the situation in the hospitals and nursing homes was threatening. The number of deaths is also increasing in Bremen. In addition, the long-term consequences of a corona disease are not yet foreseeable. “We mustn’t underestimate that,” said the senator. She appealed to the population to abide by the rules. The incisions are hard, but necessary. / Hho / DP / nas
