• Cathie Wood on stumbling blocks and depreciation: “At least it never gets boring with us.”
Cathie Wood is known today for her investment company ARK Invest (Active Research Knowledge) and is particularly popular with younger investors. In 2020, ARK managed approximately $ 30 billion in assets with its five active funds. Wood himself was worth $ 250 million in 2020, according to Forbes business magazine, making it the 80th richest self-made woman in the United States. During the corona pandemic, she even measured herself against veteran Warren Buffet and thus asserted herself – she is considered the “most successful female investor in the world” – in a male-dominated industry.
Cathie Wood: Summa cum laude from the University of California
Cathie Wood was born in the USA in 1955. She began her career while studying at the University of Southern California under Art Laffer in 1977 as an Assistant Economist at The Capital Group in Los Angeles. A year before graduating summa cum laude in 1981, she moved to Jennison Associates LLC, where she rose to become Managing Director, Chief Economist, Portfolio Manager, Director and Equity Research Analyst. After 18 years at Jennison Associates LLC, she joined Tupelo Capital Services in 1998 as a limited partner and portfolio manager. However, only three years later she left Tupelo and started at AllianceBernstein as Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and Portfolio Manager.
By the end of her career as an employee at AllianceBernstein in 2013, Cathie Wood had already developed her own investment strategy and ventured into the realm of what appeared to be risky forecasting and investments. In order to be able to fully live this way of working and not have to orientate herself further to the wishes of her superiors, the over 50 year old founded her own company in 2014: ARK Invest. Wood himself has been CEO and CIO there ever since.
Investing in disruptors brings ARK Invest 2020 big revenues
The Wall Street she-wolf invested a lot of her own fortune in the founding and development of this company – with success: The company, which is based in New York and has fewer than 50 employees, has tripled its assets and thus its value in recent years . The largest fund of ARK Invest, ARKK or ARK Innovation, has grown by around 40 percent annually in recent years. Companies that this fund has stocks include Tesla, Roku, CRISPR, the genetic testing company Invitae and the financial services provider Square. This profile corresponds to Woods’ general investment strategy: Disruptors like Tesla have always had their place in it.
And last but not least, she was able to celebrate successes in the Corona year 2020 – the Focus quotes Wood as follows: “The corona virus has brought our innovative platforms into full swing because they solve problems.”
Exceptional openness: All ARK Invest research is publicly available
In order to find such innovative platforms and disruptors, Wood employs a diverse team of analysts consisting of many young members. The special thing about it: Wood puts the research and forecasts of the team online free of charge – on YouTube, the company website and many other channels. This arouses the trust of investors and turns younger people into fans: Wood even sells his own merchandise with the ARK Invest logo or her own face on it.
While 2020 was a particularly successful year, the star investor’s setbacks were increasingly being reported at the beginning of 2021: ARK invests around ten percent of its total assets in Tesla – but its performance is negative, which means that, according to the ETF ARKK media reports, just under two weeks Quarter has lost value. The Handelsblatt quotes her from a webcast on the subject with the words that at least it never gets boring at ARK.
Cathie Wood launches a financial education program for women in 2018
In addition to her work at ARK Invest, Cathie Wood founded the Duddy Innovation Center at her old high school, Notre Dame Academy, in 2018, where young women learn about finance. She is also a regular speaker at events such as the World Economic Forum in China and the World Strategic Forum in Miami. The divorced Wall Street she-wolf also regularly receives nominations and awards from business magazines such as Bloomberg and Fortune for her work.
