A lot of water has run in the crypto world since the first purchase was made using Bitcoin that is registered. And it is that, when it is 10 years since the purchase of two pizzas for 10,000 BTC, the crypto community celebrates Bitcoin Pizza Day. To commemorate what has probably been the most expensive dinner in history.
The origin of Pizza Day
How simple things were then! Just a community of crypto fans, gathered to try to build a utopia around the creation of Satoshi Nakamoto. Well, in 2010, just one year after the birth of Bitcoin, the world’s first cryptocurrency was nothing more than a curiosity with no monetary value.
Back then, most of the communication between users of the crypto community was done through forums. There were no large crypto companies like Ripple, Binance or Coinbase offering their services to companies and individuals. And Bitcoin trading was just a dream, for some day in the distant future when BTC was worth anything.
It was in this context that what would be the first purchase with BTC in history occurred. When Laszlo Hanyecz, a user of the BitcoinTalk forum, offered 10,000 BTC to anyone who brought two pizzas home. That’s right, 10,000 Bitcoin, today equivalent to more than 94 million dollars, for just two family pizzas:
“I am willing to pay 10,000 Bitcoins for a couple of pizzas. Maybe they are two big to have leftovers for the next day. I like having leftover pizza to snack on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery, but what I’m really looking for is to get food delivered in exchange for Bitcoins where I don’t have to order or prepare them myself, something like ordering a ‘plate of breakfast ‘in a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you’re happy! ”.
A long way from the first purchase with BTC
Of course, even when Bitcoin had no real value back then, many sensed how important the cryptocurrency would be in the future. Laszlo quickly got someone who gladly brought his two pizzas in exchange for the promised 10,000 Bitcoin.
And although since then Laszlo has never expressed regret for his purchase, highlighting that at that time BTC had no value. The celebration of the so-called Pizza Bitcoin Day became popular in the crypto community, to commemorate what is recognized as the first purchase with BTC in history.
At the end of the day, beyond surprise at the amount of money paid for two pizzas. And the wish to have been part of the crypto community back then, to have charged those 10,000 BTC. Bitcoin Pizza Day is a great memory of how far the crypto world has advanced in the last ten years.
Not only because of the substantial growth in the price of Bitcoin, but because of the recognition that the cryptocurrency has obtained both inside and outside the crypto community. Thanks to which, today it is not just pizzas, but dozens of other products that we can buy with BTC from the comfort of our homes.
